Spring Training Game Recap - 3/6/04

Posted Mar 6, 2004

Luckily spring training is where you get the kinks straightened out. This was Bartolo Colon's first start as an Angel. He didn't make it out of the first inning. He threw 41 pitches before being pulled from the game and when asked about his outing, he joked and said at least I got two outs. Well we now know that our ace at least has a sense of humor. Bartolo says that he will be ready when the lights turn on. It is expected that either Washburn or Colon will be the Opening day starter.

On the offensive side of the game there were very few highlights. The best was that of Brian Specht who went 2 for 3 with and RBI. Other notables was a 2 for 2 performance by Jose Molina and Rob Quinlan who was 1 for 3 with 2 RBI's. Casey Kotchman went 1 for 1, Alfredo Amezaga was 1 for 3 and Jeff Davanon had a 2 for 3 day while scoring a run. That was it when it came to scoring runs. On the pitching side it would be hard to find the positive when a pitching staff gives up 26 runs. Several of the Angel minor league pitchers have their work cut out for them if they want to have a respectable ERA before the end of spring training. Most notable is that of Rich Fischer who allowed 7 runs in just 1.2 innings. He gave up two runs and sadly allowed more runs than outs. Other pitchers that stunk were Eric Cyr who allowed 5 runs in just 1.2 innings, Derrick Turnbow allowed 4 runs in just one inning. J. Zamora allowed 5 runs in 2/3 of an inning. Tim Bittner allowed 3 runs in 2 innings with 2 walks and 1 strikeout. Most likely Cyr, Zammora and Bittner have no chance of making the major league roster. The one that stands the most to lose is Derrick Turnbow who is fighting for a spot on the 25 man roster as it stands he is the 26th man on a 25 man roster. Hopefully, for his sake we will see much better outings as the spring unfolds and we get closer to Opening Day 2004.
