Since the Angels had no second-round pick, they didn't draft again until the end of the third round. With that selection, they stuck with their typical approach and went for a big-time high school producer.
The club tabbed Russell Moldenhauer, the former Texas 4-A player of the year, as an outfielder, although he's also played catcher and third base in high school. He is somewhat of a risky pick because he is strongly committed to the University of Texas, but the Angels should be able to match his demand for second-round money.
The left-handed slugger clubbed 13 homers in his junior year and, although his power dropped as a senior, he still hit .510.
With the 132nd overall pick, the Angels went back to Texas high schools, selecting two-sport star Clayton Fuller out of Smithson Valley High. The younger brother of Rancho Cucamonga outfielder Cody Fuller, Clayton is also a wide receiver for his high school's football team.
"From what just happened, I'm probably going to play straight baseball for the Angels," said the 18-year-old speedster. The centerfielder will look to get something done quickly and join the organization before Rookie League play begins.
In the fifth round, the Angels got their first pick from scout Tom Kotchmann, selecting big-bodied pitcher Kenneth Herndon, who goes by David. Herndon is now a three-time draftee, having been selected by the Royals out of high school in 2004 and the Twins in 2005. He is expected to be signable rather than going with his commitment to the College of Charlston.
When the Angels' minor-leaguers play flag football, they have the man to cover Fuller. With their seventh-round pick, they selected UCLA outfielder and cornerback Jarrad Page. He has told the Kansas City Chiefs that he plans to play football and was not on the UCLA baseball team this year, so it is unclear where he might fit with the Angels.
