Success the second time around
Weaver stares down the Orioles again
Weaver stares down the Orioles again

It's a common refrain when a rookie pitcher looks good early: "Let's see how he handles it when he faces teams a second time." Jered Weaver passed that test as well as he has every other this season.

Jered Weaver threw seven shutout innings against the Orioles on Monday in the Angels' 1-0 win, matching his line against Baltimore in his Major League debut on May 27.

"I threw my changeup more than the first time, and that kept them off balance," Weaver said.

The repeat performance was in important accomplishment for the rookie right-hander. After winning his first nine American League decisions, Weaver had lost the last two and was coming off his poorest start of the year.

Between Triple-A Salt Lake and the parent club, he has thrown 170 innings, well beyond any total he's ever amassed before. But any concerns of a fade down the stretch were calmed Sunday.

Weaver said he has increased his running and weight lifting in between starts to improve his strength. The strength will serve him well. If he makes his four remaining scheduled starts, he will nearly triple his innings total from his lone professional season entering the year.
