Flint Wipke moved to Double-A

Posted May 8, 2007

The Angels minor league system received a shakeup on Tuesday. Two players headed to the disabled list and many more were moved around to different spots to fill holes.

Joining the Quakes will be catcher Brett Martinez, infielder Cliff Remole, and left-hander Robert Fish. In related transactions, outfielder Josh LeBlanc and right-hander Kevin Jepsen have been placed on the seven-day disabled list and catcher Flint Wipke has been promoted to Double-A Arkansas. All of the incoming players will be in uniform with the Quakes in time for tonight’s matchup with Lake Elsinore.

Both Martinez, 23 and Fish, 19, are local products, hailing from Redlands and San Bernardino, respectively. A 24th round selection in the 2002 draft out of Riverside Community College, Martinez began the 2007 season as the backup catcher in Cedar Rapids and was hitting .192 in eight games with six RBI. Fish, who graduated from nearby Miller High School in Fontana, joins the Quakes from Extended Spring Training in Tempe, AZ. The young southpaw was the sixth round selection of the Angels in last years draft and was 1-0 with a 3.21 ERA last season for the Angels’ rookie affiliate in Tempe.

Remole, 24, has spent parts of the past two seasons in Rancho Cucamonga. The Powder Springs, GA resident was an 11th round selection of the Angels in the 2004 draft. The Georgia Tech product hit .267 with four home runs and 41 RBI in 105 games with the Quakes in 2006. Remole comes to the Quakes from Extended Spring Training.

In a previous move, the Quakes activated right-handed closer Darren O’Day from the disabled list and promoted right-handed sidearmer Kevin Lynch to Double-A Arkansas. In ten appearances for the Quakes this season, Lynch was 2-1 with a 2.04 ERA and two saves. O’Day hadn’t allowed a run in his first seven appearances this season while racking up six saves.
