Ryan Mount led the Kernels offense, going two for five with four RBI, as the Kernels had 11 hits in the game. Mount drove in two runs in the sixth on a two out single down the left field line and two more runs on his seventh home run of the season in the eighth inning.
Hank Conger was two for three and hit his tenth home run, a solo shot, over the right field wall in the seventh inning. Stantrel Smith and Mark Trumbo each had an RBI and Wil Ortiz, Matt Sweeney and Anderson Rosario each had a double.
The Kernels picked up another quality start from David Herndon (13-8) as he scattered four hits and allowed a run over eight innings to pick up his team high 13th win of the season. Bobby Cassevah struck out the side in the ninth inning in a non-save situation.
With the win, the Kernels are now 39-28 in the second half and move closer to securing their first post-season action since 2004. They still have a shot at winning the second half, as they trail Quad Cities by 1-1/2 games for first place, but due to the Kernels holding the tie-breaker advantage over Peoria and Kane County, they only have to win one of their final three games at Peoria to clinch at least a wild card spot.
The first game at Peoria is Saturday night at 6:30 pm as Sean O’Sullivan will start for the Kernels. The game can be heard on the internet at www.kernels.com , or on 1450 KMRY AM in eastern Iowa.
