Kernels starter Trevor Bell (1-0) held Clinton to a run on three hits and struck out five over seven innings to get the win. The only run was on an opposite field home run to Chad Tracy in the fifth inning. Marco Albano pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Warner Madrigal came on to close the door by striking out the side and earn his first post season save.
Mark Trumbo and Ryan Mount paced the Kernels offense. Mount was three for three with an RBI a run scored and three stolen bases while Trumbo was two for four with a double, RBI and hit a solo home run over the left-center field wall in the sixth inning. Matt Sweeney and P.J. Phillips were both one for four and Hank Conger had an RBI on a sac fly to score Trumbo in the second inning.
Clinton starter Zach Philips (0-1) allowed three runs on six hits, walked one and struck out two over six innings to take the loss.
The scene now shifts to Alliant Energy Field in Clinton for game two on Thursday night as David Herndon starts for the Kernels against lefty Kasey Kiker for the LumberKings. If the Kernels advance to the second round, the first game will be Saturday, September 8th at 4 pm at Veterans Memorial Stadium regardless of the opponent. If the Kernels play Beloit in the second round, games two and three would be at Pohlman Field in Beloit; but if the Kernels play Quad City in the second round, game two would be at John O’Donnell Stadium in Davenport on Sunday, but game three would be here at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Monday at 6:30 pm. Beloit beat Quad City, 3-0, in the first game of their best of three series.
