Saunders very good, but may get squeezed out

On the mound, Joe Saunders has pretty good control. Off it, he knows he has none. With Bartolo Colon and Jered Weaver both impressing in their latest rehab assignments, Saunders could find himself in Triple-A even after his latest strong effort.

Left-hander Joe Saunders went 6 2/3 innings Wednesday, allowing just one run on four hits in a victory over the Cleveland Indians. But as well as Saunders pitched, he doesn't know when -- or where -- his next start might be.

"I can't do anything about that," Saunders said after Wednesday's win. "I can only control what I can control. I'm just trying to go out there, pitch my game, make every start count. I can't worry about what I can't control."

Saunders was 7-3 with a 4.71 ERA in 13 starts for the Angels last summer after Colon's season was ended by rotator cuff problems. The Angels' No. 1 pick in the 2002 draft, Saunders doesn't think he still has to prove his readiness for a big-league job.

"They know I can pitch here. I know I can pitch here," Saunders said. "I think I made my case last year. I don't think that's an issue."

It probably isn't. But Saunders is still likely to be pitching in Triple-A by the end of this month. Angels manager Mike Scioscia remains non-committal about the team's plans with Weaver and Colon nearly ready to return.

"We're not even looking past this week," Scioscia said. "Let's see how these guys (Colon and Weaver) come out of it. We have a couple scenarios we'll look at." Recommended Stories
